NAACP President Urges Clemency for Death Row Convict He Sees As Anti-Gang 'Secret Weapon'

Associated Press

SACRAMENTO, Calif. Dec 6, 2005 — Calling death row inmate Stanley Tookie Williams a "secret weapon" for helping black men stay out of gangs, the head of the NAACP traveled across California on Tuesday to rally support for clemency for the convicted killer.

Bruce Gordon, president and chief executive of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said executing Williams on Dec. 13 would be a mistake.

"He is our secret weapon to help young African-Americans avoid gangs," Gordon said. "We want to save his life so he can save the lives of others." [...]

In Sacramento, Gordon delivered signed petitions from more than 56,000 people to Schwarzenegger's office, urging him to grant Williams clemency. Gordon said Schwarzenegger turned down an invitation to meet with him.
